The director of a Floyd County pantry is asking the public to be leery about calls seeking donations.

Renee Thornsberry, director of Heaven’s Harvest Food Pantry and chair of the Floyd County Emergency Food and Shelter Board, reported Wednesday that she received complaints from people who had received what appear to be scam calls seeking donations for the pantry.

“They’ve been calling around town to people in the community and using Heaven’s Harvest, trying to get credit card or bank card numbers,” Thornsberry said.

Thornsberry said two people reported receiving calls from someone who sought donations for the pantry. One woman told the caller that she already donated to the pantry, and the caller asked her to provide her banking information anyway, Thornsberry said. She reported that, during another call, the caller hung up when a woman asked for the pantry’s tax identification number.

Thornsberry said Heaven’s Harvest doesn’t call people to obtain donations.

Community members are encouraged to report suspected scam calls to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department at, (606) 886-6711.
