The Southern Water and Sewer District recently filed charges against a Floyd County resident accused of stealing water.
Greg May of Utilities Management Group recently filed charges against Wade Martin, 47, of Clear Water Road, Wayland, charging him with two felony counts of theft of services, and two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor.
May claims that Martin damaged a public water line by intentionally cutting into it to insert a diversion valve. May alleges in the complaint warrant that Martin allegedly hooked up water illegally and, after Southern Water officials unhooked his water supply, Martin allegedly made another illegal hookup to receive water again. The alleged theft occurred in June.
Martin was arrested recently at the Floyd County Justice Center and later released on a $5,000 surety bond. He reported in court documents that he is unemployed.
He is one of several Floyd County residents that Southern Water officials said will be charged with stealing water.
The district gave residents who were illegally getting water the opportunity to come into the office over a two-week period in May to sign up for service, no questions asked.
Officials later reported that about six people who had been getting water illegally came in to sign up for service during that time.
Martin is scheduled to appear in Floyd District Court on Aug. 14.
