PRESTONSBURG — Prestonsburg pushed visiting Perry Central for three quarters until the much-improved Commodores eventually pulled away to win 35-14 in a non-district high school football game at Josh Francis Field/Blackcat Stadium on Friday night.
The Blackcats and Commodores met for a regular-season finale.
With the loss, Prestonsburg slipped to 2-8.
Perry Central improved to 8-2 with the win.
The Commodores led 15-8 at halftime and carried the same lead out of the third quarter.
Despite suffering the setback, Prestonsburg showed improvement throughout the late-season matchup.
Senior running back Jayden Neace continued to lead Perry Central offensively. Neace rushed 32 times for 182 yards and four TDs.
Perry Central forced the Blackcats to play from behind throughout the non-district contest
Quarterback Chanse McKenzie aided the Perry Central offensive attack through the air, completing five of nine passes for 76 yards.
Jake Brown paced the Perry Central defensive unit, posting a game-high 20 tackles. Following Brown, Noah Canady and Ronnie Collins contributed 10 tackles apiece for the Commodores. In addition to posting 10 tackles, Collins recorded three sacks.
Ethan Eldridge provided a score from the defensive side for Perry Central, returning an interception for a TD. Eldridge recorded two interceptions for the Commodores.
Ethan Varney led Prestonsburg, rushing 22 times for 116 yards and one TD.
Ezekiel Briggs added Prestonsburg's other TD in the setback.
Defensively, Varney paced the Blackcats with nine tackles.
Both Perry Central and Prestonsburg are poised to compete in the postseason.
