Blackcats win season-opener against Letcher Central

WHITESBURG — Reigning 15th Region boys’ soccer champion Prestonsburg won its season opener on Monday, shutting out host Letcher Central 8-0.

Sophomore midfielder Matt Burchett led Prestonsburg to the win in the season opener, scoring three goals and distributing two assists.

Isaiah Collins followed Burchett in scoring for the Blackcats, adding two goals.

Grant Justice, Preston Crase and Max Jervis rounded out the Prestonsburg individual scoring, netting one goal apiece.

Dylan Moore dished out a game-high three assists for the Blackcats. Justice and Ben Burchett followed in the key offensive category, recording one assist apiece as part of Prestonsburg’s victory.  

Defensively for Prestonsburg, goalkeeper Jacob Martin recorded a shutout.

“It was a great way to start the season,” said Prestonsburg Coach Matt Burchett. “We are excited to see what we can accomplish as a team. We have a bunch of new players and some returning players playing new roles. I’m proud of the effort and execution from the boys tonight.”

Prestonsburg is scheduled to host 16th Region member Ashland Blazer for a home opener at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
