Blackcats win 15th Region

Prestonsburg captured its second straight 15th Region boys’ soccer championship at Josh Francis Field/Blackcat Stadium on Thursday.

Prestonsburg remained on top Thursday, capturing its second straight 15th Region boys’ soccer title. Determined Prestonsburg edged Lawrence County 1-0 in the 15th Region boys’ soccer title match at Josh Francis Field/Blackcat Stadium.

“Lawrence County is so well-coached and tough to score on,” said Prestonsburg Coach Brad Burchett. “We finally broke through with a goal in the second half, then our boys did a great job of keeping them from putting one in.  I’m so proud of this program and everyone involved in it. I never dreamed when I took over two years ago that we would win back-to-back region titles!

“We always give the glory to God for anything we win. These players and parents believe in what we are doing and are completely invested in our program. That makes my job easy.”

The Blackcats were limited offensively after leveling Belfry 9-1 in the semifinals of the 15th Region Boys’ Soccer Tournament two days earlier.

Grant Justice netted the game-winning goal for the Blackcats.

Defensively for Prestonsburg, goalkeeper Jacob Martin recorded a shutout.

At press time on Tuesday, Prestonsburg was set to face 14th Region champion Estill County in a Semi-State 8 match at Frederick Douglass High School n Lexington.
