EASTERN — Floyd Central broke through during the 2019 high school baseball season. The Shawn Hager-coached Jaguars managed to finish runner-up in the 58th District and advance to the 15th Region Baseball Tournament, both for the first time in school history.
Floyd Central, one of eight teams to compete in the recently-completed 15th Region Baseball Tournament, concluded the 2019 season 13-19. After finishing runner-up to Lawrence County in the 58th District, Floyd Central fell to Johnson Central in the opening round of the 15th Region Baseball Tournament. However, Floyd Central managed to push Johnson Central throughout the region tournament matchup.
Floyd Central showed a vast amount of improvement after concluding its inaugural season 9-22 in 2018. The Jaguars lost to Lawrence County during the initial round of the 2018 58th District Baseball Tournament.
The Jaguars swept 58th District foes Betsy Layne and Prestonsburg during the 2019 season. Floyd Central’s latest campaign included wins over Magoffin County, Phelps, Breathitt County, Pike County Central, Tolsia (W.Va.), Leslie County and Perry Central. The Jaguars put together four different winning streaks.
Prior to finishing runner-up to Lawrence County, Floyd Central knocked off Prestonsburg in the opening round of the 58th District Baseball Tournament.
Lawrence County captured the 2019 15th Region baseball title, defeating nemesis Johnson Central 12-7 in the championship game on Tuesday.
Opponents outscored Floyd Central 196-167 during the 2019 high school baseball season. Still, Floyd Central showed improvement offensively.
Floyd Central is due to field an experienced squad in 2020. Numerous veteran players are poised to return for Floyd Central in the 2020 high school baseball season.
