Lady Blackcats carry momentum out of Soccerama

Prestonsburg’s Elizabeth Burchett dribbles the ball down the field in last season’s 15th Region Tournament.

PRESTONSBURG — The Prestonsburg girls’ soccer team excelled at StoneCrest over the weekend, shutting out opponents Fleming County, Belfry, Powell County and Shelby Valley. The Lady Blackcats hosted the annual Soccerama over the weekend.

“We hosted another successful Soccerama and I think all the teams that participated enjoyed it,” confided Prestonsburg girls’ soccer coach Paul Burchett. “We had 10 girls’ teams and eight boys’ teams this year and it’s always a fun way to kick the season off.”

Burchett was pleased with his team’s performance but noted that there’s room for improvement.

“My girls played well,” said Burchett. “I was happy with a lot of the stuff I saw from them. We can get better, but it was a good start. We played Fleming County, Belfry, Powell County and Shelby Valley and our combined score over the 80 minutes was 21-0. Also, with 22 girls, we were able to get all of them a ton of playing time, which was great. We have a good mix of young, athletic talent and experienced talent on this team. We’re led by our three senior captains that are all four-year starters. Our senior captains are Beth Burchett, Makayla Ousley and Grace Trusty. All three players were First Team All-Region last year. Beth was also First Team All-State and Makayla received All-State honors as well. We also return senior goalkeeper Chelsea Samons, who started for us last year and our fifth senior starter is Alison Campbell, who will be a huge asset for us this year. She’s played several years of club soccer and has great athleticism and understanding of the game. We’ve put in a lot of hard work over the last few months and I think the girls were anxious to get out there and play against someone besides themselves.”

Prestonsburg concluded the 2018 girls’ high school soccer season 16-7-1. The Lady Blackcats captured the 57th District title and finished runner-up to Lawrence County in the 15th Region.

Prestonsburg will compete in a preseason event at Johnson Central during the upcoming weekend. The Lady Blackcats are scheduled to visit 14th Region member Letcher County Central for a season opener on Monday, Aug. 12.
