PRESTONSBURG — The Larry Hodge era of the Prestonsburg volleyball program will start in neighboring Pike County. Prestonsburg is scheduled to open the 2019 high school volleyball season at 15th Region counterpart East Ridge on Monday, Aug. 19.

Hodge made the move to Prestonsburg from in-County nemesis Betsy Layne. A longtime assistant at Allen Central prior to leading Betsy Layne, Hodge replaced Bobby Hackworth as the Lady Blackcats’ head coach.

Betsy Layne ended the 2018 season 6-20.

Prestonsburg compiled a 9-20 record in 2018.

Dwayne Johnson was tabbed the new head coach of the Betsy Layne volleyball team.

Along with East Ridge, Prestonsburg’s 2019 schedule will include matches versus June Buchanan, Paintsville, Pike County Central, Johnson Central, Betsy Layne, Martin County, Floyd Central, Phelps, Belfry, Letcher County Central, Lawrence County and Tug Valley (W.Va.).

The Lady Blackcats opened preseason practice earlier in the month.

Following the conclusion of the upcoming regular-season, Prestonsburg will compete in the 2019 58th District Volleyball Tournament.
