Who: Leslie County (2-5) at Betsy Layne (0-6)

Coaches: Leslie County, Eddie Melton; Betsy Layne, Scotty McCoy.

Notes: The Betsy Layne Bobcats are set to host the Leslie County Eagles in a Class 2A District 8 football game. Leslie County will carry a two-game win streak into Betsy Layne for the district matchup on Friday night.

The Eagles, under the direction of veteran head coach Eddie Melton, have claimed back-to-back district wins over East Ridge and Prestonsburg. Leslie County is 2-5 overall and 2-0 in Class 2A District 8. 

Through the first seven games in the 2018 high school football season, opponents have outscored the Eagles 222-145. But Leslie County has fared much better both offensively and defensively in its last two games.

Zack Parker, Taten Smith and Dylan Adams lead the Eagles. Parker has completed 55 passes for 940 yards and six TDs while throwing six interceptions in 111 aerial attempts. Leading Leslie County on the ground, Smith has rushed 86 times for 715 yards and nine TDs. Pacing the Eagles in the receiving column, Adams has reeled in 17 receptions for 370 yards and four TDs. 

Betsy Layne is 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the district. The Bobcats have dropped games to Sheldon Clark, Floyd Central, East Carter, Magoffin County, Shelby Valley and East Ridge. 

The Bobcats have struggled thus far in the 2018 season. In six games, opponents have outscored Betsy Layne 258-44. 

Chase Mims, a freshman, took over as Betsy Layne’s starting quarterback in the preseason and continues to show improvement in his first varsity season. Running back Austin Tackett leads the Bobcats offensively. Tackett has emerged as Betsy Layne’s leading rusher. 

Currently, Leslie County and Shelby Valley are vying for the top spot in Class 2A District 8. 

Kickoff for the Leslie County-Betsy Layne football game is set for 7:30 p.m.

Who 2 Watch: For Betsy Layne, sophomore running back Austin Tackett.

One of the area’s most underrated young high school football players, Tackett leads Betsy Layne in rushing. Through Betsy Layne’s first five games, Tackett had rushed 42 times for 203 yards. 

For Leslie County, sophomore quarterback Zack Parker.

Parker is closing in on the 1,000-yard passing mark in his first season as Leslie County’s starting quarterback. He has helped to lead Leslie County to back-to-back Class 2A District 8 wins over East Ridge and Prestonsburg.
