Georgia head coach Kirby Smart met with the media on Tuesday ahead of Georgia’s matchup with Auburn. Smart discussed a variety of topics, including injuries, his stance on wearing black jersey and on the rumors that defensive coordinator Mel Tucker is being considered for the Maryland head coaching job.
Fromm’s bruise and other injuries
Jake Fromm suffered a bruise on his leg at some point in the second half of the Kentucky game, which is why he was wearing a wrap on his leg in practice this week, Smart said.
Smart also discussed the status of senior Lamont Gaillard and freshman Cade Mays on the offensive line. He said both are limited and that they did a little bit of work in practice but couldn’t do everything. They are both listed as day-to-day.
Freshman defensive back Divaad Wilson is now cleared to play, but Smart said that doesn’t mean he is going to play. Wilson has begun practicing with the backups in practice instead of the walk-ons, but Smart indicated that he’s got a lot more to learn before he sees the field.
“He’s taken a lot of reps, the sooner he learns it and is able to play, Smart said. “Hopefully he can get in that competition and mix it up.”
Lastly, Smart said that Demetris Robertson has been dealing with an injury, but he wouldn’t specify. He said he doesn’t know if he will be cleared for the Auburn game or not.
Smart dismissed need for black jerseys
Based on Smart's comments, it seems unlikely Georgia will be wearing black jerseys for Saturday’s game.
Smart said that the Bulldogs wore black jerseys against Louisiana-Lafayette in 2016 for “energy and enthusiasm,” but they shouldn't need any help in that department against the Tigers.
“If we can’t get enthusiasm [or] if we can’t get up for Auburn, then we’ve got some other problems,” Smart said.
He didn’t rule out the possibility of wearing black jerseys in the future, nor did he confirm that they won't wear them in the future.
Rumors regarding defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and Maryland
Jeff Ermann, publisher for the 247Sports site for coverage of Maryland, first reported that there was potential mutual interest between Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and the Maryland athletic program for the school’s football head coaching job.
Smart indicated that he is familiar with the situation that Tucker is in since Tucker's name was previously mentioned in other jobs, but Smart isn’t worried about Tucker’s focus at the moment.
“Mel is one of the most professional people I’ve ever met,” Smart said. “He’s worried about these guys and this team. He’s worried about coaching his tail off for them.”
