Week 7 Prep Preview: Belfry at Floyd Central

Who: Belfry (3-2) at Floyd Central (2-4)

Kickoff: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Location: Jaguars Stadium, Eastern.

Coaches: Philip Haywood, Belfry; Shawn Hager, Floyd Central.

Notes: Floyd Central is set to host perennial state title contender Belfry for a Class 3A, District 8 football game on Friday night.

Belfry ended the first half of the 2019 high school football regular-season 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Class 3A, District 8. The Pirates have posted wins over Southwestern, Lexington Christian and district rival Magoffin County. Belfry has dropped games to Archbishop (Ohio) and Pikeville.

The Pirates have outscored opponents 150-77. Belfry is averaging 324.4 rushing yards per game.

Peyton Hensley (482 yards, five touchdowns), Ben Bentley (472 yards, six touchdowns) and Isaac Dixon (376 yards, four touchdowns) rank as Belfry’s top three rushers. However, Dixon has been sidelined with an injury.

Defensively, John Ashurst and Isaiah Birchfield are the Pirates’ top two tacklers.

Floyd Central is 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the district. The Jaguars have notched wins over Knott County Central and Prestonsburg. Floyd Central has dropped games to Clay County, North Laurel, Hazard and district rival Pike County Central.

Opponents have outscored the Jaguars 145-129.

Quarterback Brant Potter leads the Jaguars. Potter has completed 13 of 22 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, Potter has rushed 36 times for 302 yards and three touchdowns.

Dalton Boyd leads Floyd Central in rushing. Boyd has rushed 88 times for 404 yards and four touchdowns.

Defensively, Noah Marcum and Chad Bates are the Jaguars’ top two tacklers.

Belfry pulled away to beat Floyd Central 40-8 when the two teams met for a district matchup in 2018.

Kickoff for the latest Floyd Central-Belfry football game is set for 7:30 p.m.

Who 2 Watch: For Belfry, senior running back Ben Bentley.

Committed to Youngstown State University, Bentley is a proven rusher for the Pirates. Along with excelling offensively, Bentley delivers on the defensive side.

For Floyd Central, junior quarterback Brant Potter.

One of the area’s most underrated high school football players, Potter has helped to pace Floyd Central. Potter leads Floyd Central in passing and ranks second in rushing for the Jaguars.
