The search for a missing Magoffin County child ended with a very unexpected result for one local firefighter who assisted in the rescue of 22-month-old Kenneth Howard who had been missing for almost three days.

Danny Whitt and Gregory Davis, both of Turkey Creek, became involved in the search Wednesday morning after the Prestonsburg fire chief called the Belfry Volunteer Fire Department asking if there was anyone with search and rescue experience available to aid in the search.

Whitt said of the moment when he first laid eyes on Howard: “All of a sudden, I looked up the hill and saw blond hair and blue eyes sitting on a rock. He had been missing for about 67 hours. We had expected this to be a search and recovery and thought we would be bringing a body back,” said Whitt, a 12-year firefighter. “It was completely a change of mindset when we found him. It was a very emotional search and rescue.”
